Fair Wind Sailing School operates
in the Virgin Islands with sailing lessons running
from November through July. Our sailing
base is in St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands at
the American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook, St. Thomas.
Fair Wind Sailing School’s Virgin Islands
sailing instruction features our Instant
Bareboater™ Sailing Lessons --
a true sailing school at sea! Sailing lessons
are weeklong, live aboard cruises leaving St Thomas,
Virgin Islands and sailing through both the U.S.
and British Virgin Islands (BVI). Successful completion
of Fair Wind Sailing School’s Instant Bareboater™ class provides students with ASA certification
through Bareboat Chartering (ASA 101, 103, 104).
The Instant Bareboater™ sailing instruction is
an all inclusive class with all on boat expenses
included in one fee (only exceptions are for alcoholic
beverages and Captain’s tip).
Instant Bareboater™ sailing lessons
begin on Saturday afternoon with orientation,
safety checks, and meal provisioning.
As part of our sailing lessons,
students will sleep aboard our yacht in St Thomas, U.
S. Virgin Islands on Saturday night (Friday
night sleep aboard is also available). Then, on
Sunday we set sail from St Thomas through the Virgin
Islands. At Fair Wind Sailing School, we believe the
best way to learn how to sail is to maximize the time
spent on the water sailing the boat. Our sailing instruction
emphasizes boat handling and safety procedures (man
over board, hove-to, emergency procedures, etc.) and
we spend 4-6 hours a day sailing and practicing sailing
drills. In addition, our sailing lessons cover the boat
systems required to live aboard a cruising yacht. You
will learn the basics of marine electronics, plumbing,
inboard diesel engines as well as water and power conservation.
We will spend time learning the tough chores
-- anchoring, picking up mooring balls and docking so
that when you have completed sailing lessons with Fair
Wind Sailing School, your confidence will be high. Finally,
Fair Wind Sailing School is the only ASA sailing school
that operating in both the U. S. and British Virgin
Islands. Our sailing lessons cover proper yachting customs
when sailing internationally and also learn how to clear
customs in both the U. S. and British Virgin Islands.
The sailing lessons conclude with a return back to St
Thomas, US Virgin Islands on Friday afternoon in time
to catch flights out of the Virgin Islands back home.

New for the 2007-08 sailing season,
Fair Wind Sailing School offers Advanced Coastal Cruising
(ASA 106) and Coastal Navigation (ASA 105) in the Virgin
Islands. These advanced sailing lessons begin in St
Thomas, US Virgin Islands on Saturday afternoon and
include visits to all 3 US Virgin Islands. First, we'll visit the beautiful but little traveled south side of St John's, then its an all day passage to St Croix where we'll perform night time man-over-board
drills and practice other advanced sailing drills while
still having time to explore the beautiful island. Finally we'll return to St. Thomas on an all night passage. We will also learn the techniques and tools
of coastal navigation along both passages. Bareboat
certification (ASA 104) is pre-requisite for the class. See a typical Advanced Sailing Lessons itinerary.

Starting with the 2007-08 sailing season,
Fair Wind Sailing School became the first ASA sailing
school to offer sailing lessons aboard our beautiful
45 foot cruising catamaran. These sailing lessons offer
the opportunity to complete our Instant Bareboater™ sailing
lessons while also gaining ASA certification in catamarans
(ASA 114). Our catamaran sailing lessons run out of
our St Thomas, US Virgin Islands base. No prior sailing

In addition to lots of sailing, the
Virgin Islands’ sailing infrastructure provides
opportunity for unlimited fun. Our typical itinerary
includes stops at different anchorage every night and
may include a quiet anchorage off St. Thomas or a great
beach bar or restaurant in the British Virgin Islands.
Typical days allow for time snorkeling, hiking, exploring
or just “liming” on a gorgeous white sand
beach.
In addition
to the Instant Bareboater curriculum, Fair Wind Sailing
School also offers classes in Coastal Navigation, Celestial
Navigation, Basic Sailing, Basic Cruising and Advanced
Sailing at our Virgin Islands sailing school. Due to
irregular demand for these sailing classes, they are
scheduled upon request. Come join Fair Wind Sailing
